Shun Art Gallery is pleased to present The two-person exhibition ”LOVE, LIFE and JOMON” by Atsuko Mu YUMA and Kenichi INOUE will be held from Sat 17 May 2025 to Sun 1 June 2025. We sincerely invite you to join us.
“LOVE, LIFE and JOMON” marks the first collaboration between these two artists. This exhibition explores fundamental questions like “What does it mean to be human?” and “What does it mean to live?” by weaving together ancient memories and contemporary sensibilities, inner prayers and outward gazes, through the medium of contemporary art. The exhibition will feature Atsuko Mu Yuma’s paintings and multimedia installations alongside 32 of Kenichi Inoue’s two-dimensional works.
Based in New York and Japan, Atsuko Mu Yuma’s work spans painting, installation, and performance, often focusing on themes like “motherhood,” “rebirth,” and “spiritual love.” Her creations are deeply connected to the feminine body and a spiritual connection with nature, evoking a quiet resonance within the viewer.
Kenichi Inoue, rooted in the culture of Japanese characters, reconstructs kanji, hiragana, and katakana in his art, capturing the “undefined possibilities” that arise in moments when meaning dissolves. His works, often created on cedar panels, reveal “traces” that blur the line between text and symbol, quietly invoking the deep-seated memories of the Japanese people.
The word “Jomon” refers not only to an ancient culture but also to an “unforgettable memory” embedded deep within our bodies. In this exhibition, Atsuko Mu Yuma captures the primal archetype of motherhood, while Kenichi Inoue delves into the profound layers of written language, each intertwining their personal narratives to create powerful, resonant works.
As their distinct approaches intersect, this exhibition presents a rich, layered dialogue, echoing messages of love and life from the depths of ancient times. We invite you to experience this unique artistic encounter.
