Shun Art Gallery Tokyo is pleased to present Emi Uchida’s solo exhibition “from line” at its Harajuku space, running from September 6 to October 12. Uchida has established her unique form of abstract expression through the dynamic interplay of delicate lines and vivid colors. Her works have already garnered high acclaim internationally, particularly in Asia, Europe, and the United States.
The most distinctive feature of Uchida’s work lies in the structures woven from countless lines. She first applies a base color to the canvas, then draws hundreds or even thousands of lines in charcoal. Leaving traces of the underlying color along the edges of these lines, she overlays them with white paint to create a sense of depth. By filling in the web-like mesh of lines with colors one by one, she generates contrasts in hue and tonality that produce a striking sense of spatial depth—allowing flat surfaces to appear as if parts are floating up before the viewer’s eyes.
This technique goes beyond mere decoration; it is an attempt by the artist to reconstruct the fabric of the world through the fundamental unit of the line. Lines sometimes mark boundaries, sometimes capture the passage of time. The space formed by innumerable lines and color planes expands like neural networks or cosmic galaxies, guiding viewers into infinite realms of imagination.
The exhibition “from line” will feature over ten works, including new pieces. As the title suggests, everything begins with a line, extending into space, color, and ultimately the imagination of the viewer. Uchida’s works transcend logic like magic, intertwining complex emotions while embodying her spirit of inquiry into the possibilities of painting. We warmly invite you to experience this exhibition.
