Spirits of Salts
With the popularity and advancement of photography, people have forgotten how precious images are. Photographers have naturally assumed that photography is about the moment as it happens at the moment. Yet this immediacy and objectivity are lost with today’s internet and various convenient retouching techniques. So, I abandoned the contemporary approach to photography and tried to go back to the nineteenth century when images were precious. When I fixed the pictures on these handmade photosensitive salt papers, it was as if the history and emotions that used to be hidden in the information of the negatives were truly restored.
Is the reality of this moment the present moment?
No. These photographs do not belong to the present but cannot be denied as reality. Time is not fixed in photography, like the city and human culture. It is only through photography that I can keep in my memory what is destined to be lost and bring back to life what is passing away. And through the darkroom, I can get myself back to the beginning of my memories again and again.
