Shi Yiqun sees creation as a form of self-expression, using his painting language to explain love, speak of his heart, and face himself. The artist is reluctant to limit his subject matter; all his expressions come from his true feelings. His technique echoes his love of Impressionism, Fauvism and Nabi as if the great symbols and profound ideas were someone else’s concern, and he is recording the sorrow and joy of individual lives. The intense colours make the otherwise objective existences a reconstruction of his inner being; in his numerous self-portraits, we can see his love for the real and his rebellion against the empty reality of contemporary art.
