Toyomi HOSHINA was born in 1953. Under the influence of Mono-ha artists such as Taka ISHII and Noboru TAKAYAMA in the 1970s, he went to study at the Tokyo University of the Arts. His peers include Tadashi KAWAMATA, younger generation includes Tatsuo MIYAJIMA, and Kazumi NAKAMURA.
Toyomi HOSHINA belongs to the generation of the 1980s school of Post Mono-ha, which expanded the space, field, and physical aspects of the 1970s school of Mono-ha. Representative artists include the sculptor Shigeo TOYA, Tadashi KAWAMATA, Toyomi HOSHINA, Katsuhiko ENDO, and Naoki Suwa and etc..The post-Mono-ha movement brings together a group of installation artists who value environmental and field changes, as well as painters and sculptors seeking to revive the form of painting and sculpture.
HOSHINA received attention at the 1982 Snow field event and the Paris Youth Biennale. He made daily materials, wood, paper, ink and other materials with Japanese elements into devices in “space” and “field”, showing the structure of internal-external relations and the “field” constructed by the permeability of light and the touch of body intervention.
After 2000, he produced a site-specific art installation at Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial. In September and November 2002, he began to produce painting works, starting from sketches created by feelings in daily life to creating installation art and painting works. His main creative venue is in Japan, and there have been exhibitions overseas such as in Switzerland, Germany, the United States, and China. In recent years, his creations have included the “Black Rain” series and the “Light and Dark” series. At the Seto International Art Festival in 2022, he completed a huge painting set of the 1880s Japanese history (a 40 x 6 m panoramic reconstruction project consisting of Western scenery).
